For all his meanness, Rosenfield's a fairly straightforward and entertaining character, delivering exposition along with amusing insults. Cooper, too, is as ingratiating as he is eccentric, and has a keener understanding of the good and evil around Twin Peaks than might be evident from his enthusiastic civic boosterism. And for all the episode's lack of action, there are major developments on the Teen Mystery Solver front, where Donna decides to take over Laura's Meals on Wheels responsibilities to see if that leads anywhere fruitful. All the high school heroines seem poised to win justice for Laura by taking on aspects of her life. In Donna's case, that means acting like a bad girl: smoking and flirting with James. For Maddy Ferguson, that means experiencing violent hallucinations, and slowly going mad. As for Audrey Horne, she escapes her own season finale cliffhanger — which had her trapped in a One Eyed Jacks hotel room, about to have sex with her father — by donning a mask and refusing to submit.

An uncharitable critic might say that this is the director's botched attempt at slapstick comedy. But the moment's so prolonged that the unfunniness feels more intentional. It's a discordant note, played against an unusually direct bit of plotting. Later, back at the station, Cooper and a visiting Albert Rosenfield run through everything they've learned about the case to that point, reaching the conclusion that Leo couldn't be their serial killer, and that an as-yet-unidentified third man murdered Laura and scrawled "FIRE WALK WITH ME" onto a scrap of paper in his own blood. Again, as a way of making a dry recitation of facts more interesting — for himself, anyway — Lynch runs the audio from the debriefing over superimposed shots of doughnuts, swaying trees, a traffic light and a cabin. Cooper, meanwhile, completes his recitation of the murder victims with a solemn, "Waldo the bird is dead. " There are moments of relatively unadulterated conventionality in "May the Giant Be With You. "
Unable to open the door, she finds a kitchen knife, She cuts a hole in the home's unfinished wall and calls for help, but Leo throws her to the floor. Bobby soon arrives as Leo approaches Shelly with an ax. Hearing her screams, Bobby goes inside and just as Leo prepares to kill Shelly, he tries to disarm him, but is pinned to the wall. Shelly finds the kitchen knife again and stabs Leo, who then escapes. Harry confirms to Cooper his mutual belief that Earle was responsible for the murder, and offers to let Cooper investigate the case, as he was still considered a deputy. Hawk announces that Hank Jennings was not at the buy due to being in the hospital, claiming to have been hit by a bus, and that he had been charged with several parole violations. He also informs them of Leo coming to and attacking Shelly. Andy tells Lucy that they needed to talk about Nicky due to his and Dick 's belief that he murdered his own parents. This upsets Lucy, saying that neither he nor Dick were capable fathers.
