It's not like Angela's relationship had some imminent obstacle comparable to Pin-Jui's desire to immigrate to the States (at least, not that the viewers know of); in fact, he even describes Eric to be "not very ambitious. " Does he think Eric is only in it for the money? Well, because he asks Angela if she can afford the apartment (BTW is this the same as the ridiculously lavish New York apartment at the end? ), we don't have enough evidence to support that stretch of a theory just half an hour into the film. I was also disappointed in the ending. I guess connecting through heartbreak is the ultimate point, but both Pin-Jui and Angela remain so frustratingly static throughout the film. Pin-Jui has certainly come to the realization that he fucked up in deciding to marry Zhenzhen and move to the States, but he essentially just wallows in his self-pity for the rest of his life. I didn't want Pin-Jui to respond to his daughter's heartbreak by showing how he never got over his own. Admittedly, I didn't like Zhenzhen much at first (since I'd been rooting for Pin-Jui and A-Yuan to end up together), but I loved how Zhenzhen grows and becomes her own person.
