(Added to the "Thic-Crowe" canon) Well.. there was a lot to take in there. My wife may never forgive me for the scene involving the baby and a deranged "Cuntstable"... George Mackay is so good. The aspect ratio getting smaller which is mad. Ned Kelly was a very strange man. Everyone in this film is pretty mad Shoulda just let all the men kiss, everyone would've been happy. "Do you like boats? " Was a line in this movie and I said "yes, Nic, I do. " if ned kelly had a nose piercing he would have killed it in the diy scene boy - bad man - inconsistent monitor - very good Totally schizo at times. The raw energy is absolutely there, which is worth celebrating. This said, the overall effect ironically finds a pretty appropriate symbol in Ned's hypermanic flailing arm shooting method in the climactic gun fight. Some bullets hit their mark (the line that a mother will only know whether they've been a good one "in the lengths they go to care for you"), and some fly off into the black aether. A good handful of the characters I had absolutely no idea what their intent or purpose was in the film, even though they almost all added a compelling new shade.

all hail the man behind Assassin's Creed! Justin Kurzel is one of the most exciting filmmakers working right now. His command of craft has been obvious from his amazing debut Snowtown. Very few filmmakers handle violence the way he does. It's taken very seriously. No pulp, no romanticizing. Extremely realistic and usually drawn out for maximum impact. Love the approach to this... a very fictionalized account of the legend of Ned Kelly. Russell Crowe's portrayal of Harry Power is so fun. Charlie Hunnam hasn't been better. Nicholas Hoult and Thomasin McKenzie are strong supporting actors who shine in their scenes and George MacKay delivers on all the promise of 1917. It's an eerie sight. Kurzel favors stylized images and the occasional anachronistic metal track to provoke a mood more than faithfully recreate history. And his approach works well in this film, bolstered by a strong cast, which features MacKay, Russell Crowe, Nicholas Hoult, Charlie Hunnam, Thomasin McKenzie, and Essie Davis. Be warned: It's a brutal watch from beginning to end, with plenty of scenes of bloodshed and abuse. But like last year's film The Nightingale, it makes its point: Cycles of violence and abuse beget cycles of violence and abuse, and not just on the micro scale. A country's violent history of oppression and thievery doesn't go away in a generation. And the heroes it gets are often the ones it deserves.
