Capolavoro assouto. Basterebbero due parole per definire il film di Todd Phillips, che dovrebbere erigire un monumento al fenomenale Joaquin Phoenix: se il film entrerà, come è probabile, nella storia del Cinema, lo si deve al suo istrionico protagonista. Phoenix riesce a condurci nelle viscere della malattia mentale di Arthur, ce le fa vedere da dentro, ce le fa capire, ce le fa sentire. Per questo motivo è impossibile non provare empatia per lui, è impossibile non provare dolore con lui. Il martirio della mente si fa deformazione fisica, mostrata ed esibita dal regista per enfatizzare la condizione di Arthur, ma non ce n'era forse neanche bisogno, tale è l'espressività del volto e soprattutto degli occhi di Phoenix, il che non è certo una novità. L'attore usa quindi tutto il corpo, come fosse un manoscritto (ma senza tatuaggi.. ) per descrivere l'abisso mentale, le difficoltà, ma anche la grazia, la dolcezza e il suo essere preso a schiaffi dalla vita: nelle sequenze in cui balla, c'è tutto questo.
