The only stars given here are for the obvious effort Tom Hanks made to try and make something out of this mess. Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2019 Verified Purchase The shortest of the Robert Langdon movie adaptations of Dan Brown's book, which was the longest of the most famous trilogy volumes. This standalone film sequel has no relationship to the prior two films, other than the author, Ron Howard, and Tom Hanks, which is a good thing, making the order viewed unimportant. Loved the on-location filming that added to the drama's experience and the characters in the movie. Although there are some variations from the book, obviously for time and visual media format, other than some minor revisions at the end, both movie and book are nearly the same. Tom Hanks' performance was well done, while not upstaging the presentations by the other actors, something that made the movie more believable. A fun movie to watch multiple times, the storyline emphasizes more the drama than surprises, thereby making the movie more focused and enjoyable.

However, he is tracked by various agencies at the start of the film and chooses to commit suicide rather than tell them where it is, when he could have just let it off as soon as it was created. This is the major flaw in the storyline rather like the 'Lord of the Rings' where Frodo and his pal spend weeks or months trekking to mordor when Gandalf can create magical beasts from moths and they could have flown there instead. Hanks and Jones team up to find the virus before it is too late and solve the puzzle path mainly set in Italy and the beautiful scenery, paintings, murals, sculptures and architecture of Florence and Venice. 4. 0 out of 5 stars I Like The Character Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 6, 2019 Verified Purchase As the above title would suggest, I like Dan Brown's Robert Langdon character. I have read all the books and enjoyed the hell (inferno) out of them, but books, and films of books, are always a challenge for any director to unravel in a pleasing cinematic fashion.

Ron Howard does a sterling job - as he always does - in bringing Dan Brown's novel to life. And Tom Hanks is highly believable as Langdon. But the way in which the core story unfolds is very different from the novel and the ending is purely an invention of the screen writer. I wouldn't say it's disappointing but the film varies greatly from the book. The sets and locations are all wonderful to behold as Langdon travels around in search of clues and answers. To sum up, the book is not the film, the film is not the book, but as a piece of cinema I found it an enjoyable watch especially when the plot matched that which I recognised from the novel. Overall I am pleased to add this title to my collection. More Poor Man's Bourne than Da Vinci Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 19, 2017 Verified Purchase It's a rollicking romp with the most beautiful scenery, yet it seems to lack heart and soul and emotion. It's the third in the trilogy but 'film by numbers', sadly. Plot-wise it has far more in common with the first Bourne movie than Da Vinci Code or Angels, but not anywhere near being in the same class.

The clues are so obtuse, in fact, that no one could follow them, unless he wrote the screenplay. By the way, many of the characters seem to be able to teleport from one locale to another, too. If you like Dan Brown and Tom Hanks, you will still like this movie. Just ignore the plot. Top reviews from other countries 2. 0 out of 5 stars I was disappointed... Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 19, 2017 Verified Purchase I was pretty disappointed in this having read the book. True books are generally always better than the film but I usually do also really enjoy a film if I've enjoyed the book it's based on. The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons films I enjoyed very much despite them not quite living up to the books. But this some ways it followed the general plot well but with a few things changed slightly as they always tend to be in films. Some parts seemed a bit to quickly glided over and happened so fast that you didn't get to experience the effect of them that seem such a big part of the story when you read the book.

Enjoyable for a Saturday night though. 1. 0 out of 5 stars God help us what a farce... Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 26, 2018 Verified Purchase This is risible. It's the Hollywood tripe machine in full flight believing it's own publicity. With actors, and I use the term loosely, so far up themselves, and each other, that all they can do is pull faces. It must be the smell of bs. Ron Howard... get a proper job.

Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2017 Verified Purchase Being a big fan of the Robert Langdon books and of Tom Hanks this was a must see for me. I enjoyed the movie but I'm not sure I would have liked it quite as much had I not already read the book. I know better than to expect a movie to ever be as good as the book but this one comes across as more of a straight-up action film. For some reason I can't fathom they chose to omit a lot of the historical background, one of the key elements that make the books and previous movies so interesting and memorable, We just don't get to see the wheels in Robert's mind turning like we did in the previous movies; what we do get to see is him running and bleeding a lot. As I said, I did enjoy it as an action film and don't regret buying it but I'm sure I won't being watching it multiple times as I have "The Da Vinci Code" and "Angels & Demons".

Although the film ending was appropriate and satisfying, I liked the book ending better. A fun 2-hour movie experience when you need a fast diversion. Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2017 Verified Purchase This is a visually stunning movie with lots of great chase and fight sequences, set in some very lovely cities. But the storyline just has too many unbelievable elements and non-sequiturs, and the clues are so labored, that after a few minutes all that's left are the visuals. The starting premise is fine, stock thriller fodder. A genius wants to cull the world's population by half in order to save both the planet and humanity itself. He develops a plague virus. Okay so far. But instead of just releasing the virus he puts it in an aerosol bomb somewhere, with a countdown timer. The genius has associates. Some know exactly where the bomb is but are content to wait there and be infected when it blows up. Other associates are deliberately not told where the virus bomb is, and instead are given an obtuse starting clue that might lead them to the bomb (if they are very smart, and dispose the services of the hero's expertise), where their mission would be to ensure that no one prevents it from blowing up.

There didn't feel much mystery or excitement. Then I was even more disappointed towards the end when the whole idea behind the original plot of certain characters and the story in the book was changed. I don't see why that was necessary. This could have been a really good film. I'd say it's still worth a watch if you are a fan of the book and like seeing them put to screen. But I would prepare to be unimpressed... Of course, perhaps a lower expectation would improve it it for some. 3. 0 out of 5 stars Watchable but flawed Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 2, 2019 Verified Purchase Good performances from Hanks and Jones save this film from being worse. The initial premise is, of course, an elite agenda 21/30 to cull the population. A billionaire agrees with this and so creates a virus to wipe out at least half of the world's population or even up to 95%. This he believes is saving the world. Instead of just letting off the airborne virus, he chooses to hide it and creates a trail of clues so his girlfriend can find it in case something happens to him.

I'm sure I will read the book again at some point in the future and hope for those who watch the movie first that it doesn't put them off from reading the book, that would be a real shame. Too bad they didn't make a movie for "The Lost Symbol"; now that's a book with the potential to make a truly outstanding movie. Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2017 Verified Purchase I admire Tom Hanks' acting skill, but he wasn't given much to work with here. I will always prefer any book to the movie, but I appreciate well done book to screen adaptations. This doesn't come close being a faithful, or even coherent, telling of the book. I wonder if the screenwriter bothered to read the book at all. It isn't my favorite Dan Brown book, but they had much better material to work with than thin plot they cobbled together. All of the historic details and the charm of the Robert Langdon character is missing here. It isn't even movie of the week material. Save your money and spend it on something worth watching.
